February is “Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.” As parents and adults who care about children, we can have a positive influence by modelling and promoting self-esteem, respect and healthy relationships.

Vice President Joe Biden, author of the 1994 Violence Against Women Act, released the following statement regarding teen dating violence:

“After fifteen years of working to end domestic violence, we have learned that teens are not immune from abuse in relationships. Teen dating violence is all too common, and ends up leading to vicious and unhelathy cycles for years to come. Our responsibility – as parents, teachers, mentors and community leaders - is to guide our young people towards respectful relationships free from harrassment, teach them that it’s ok to walk away from a bad situation; and encourage them to speak out hwen they see a friend in trouble. In many communitites, teens themselves are leading the way in organizing their schools and communities to stand against violence. I commend them.”

For the past decade, without personal gain or accolades, Thom Craig has served this community and its children with gentle strength, honesty and integrity. During Thom’s tenure on the Board, the district has been recognized state-wide as excellent with distinction, on a level with other districts in much larger and more economically fortunate communities.

Finding public servants motivated by cause over self interest is a rare thing. Thom is one of those unique selfless leaders we should all strive to emulate.  He has rightfully earned the gratitude and respect of the entire community.

Thom ended his participation on the Board on January 6, 2010 when he resigned the appointed postion of Amy Goodson-Beal’s unexpired term.

Grassroot lobbying efforts to contact legislators have made a difference!

Members of the OH General Assembly have reached bipartisan agreement on HB 318, resolving the state budget shortfall.

An excerpt  from Govenor Strickland’s press release note that as a result of this agreement, the legislature will temporarily postpone the income tax rate reduction, which will ensure that OH schools will receive approximately $844 million in resources for the fiscal years 2010 and 2011. ($1,896,445.70 is earmarked for Tallmadge.) Click here to read Governor Strickland’s press release in its entirety.
